How to Handle Stress (From Psalm 131)
Stress seems to dominate our lives today. When you work hard, get over extended in commitments, and become tired, stress jumps on you like a pouncing lion. Seems to be human nature to have stress, but few know how to handle it.
God tells us how to deal with stress in several passages in Scripture. Psalm 131 is my favorite, if you follow this often, you can seriously reduce your stress. Open your Bible there and follow along.
LORD, my heart is not haughty
-Be humble, not arrogant, not self-centered. Being humble simplifies some things.
Nor my eyes lofty
-Don’t be proud, don’t impress others, don’t set your sights too high. Those cause stress.
Neither will I concern myself with great matters
-Don’t worry about what you cannot control. Do your best, and let God handle the rest.
Nor with things too profound for me
-Don’t waste effort dealing with what you cannot handle. Don’t take on too much. Simplify.
Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul
-Be self-disciplined, don’t be anxious, don’t worry about things in the future, don’t allow things to clutter your thoughts.
-Christians will be spending eternity in Heaven with Jesus, that takes a lot of stress away right there.
-Calm your emotions, so you can think better.
-It’s never as bad as it seems.
-Will this thing matter two weeks from now? If not, minimize the stress of it.
-Your loving God is in control.
-God is molding you to be more like Jesus, go with it.
-Feed on His faithfulness. Remember times past where He took care of you.
-Deal with the important more than the urgent.
Like a (un)weaned child is with its mother
-Trust God to take care of you and to supply all your needs like a baby does with its mother.
Like a weaned child is my soul within me
-Wean yourself away from worldly things and fleshly wants, many of which are stress causing distractions.
Hope in the LORD from this time forth and forever
–Your hope, and trust is in God. He has you in His hands, and only lets in what He allows. Always.
