Check Your Prayer Attitude
Beginning each day with prayer is the most important thing I do all day. Prayer is the #1 tool in my toolbox.
However, it’s easy to have a misguided attitude when praying.
One of my hero’s is R.G. LeTourneau, and I graduated from the college he founded. In the book “R.G. LeTourneau Mover of Mountains and Men” is one of my favorite quotes from R.G.:
“Deeply worried…I got down on my knees and prayed, “Don’t let me down now, Lord…and if You let me down, I’m ruined.” Right there I saw my mistake. “Strike that out, Lord,” I hastened to say. “I didn’t mean that. I’m not asking You not to let me down. I’m asking You to help me not let You down. I’m not asking to use You. I’m asking You to use me.” That had been my trouble all along. All wrapped up in my own petty problems, I had once more begun to think I was working for myself instead of the Lord. I slept well that night, and when I woke up, I had the answer to my problem.” -R.G. Letourneau “Mover of Mountains and Men”
I can’t add much to that other than to say it’s not so much about what God can do for you, it’s about what Jesus already did and what you can do for Him. It’s OK to ask God for things, He loves us and is generous, but our focus shouldn’t be primarily on what we can get from Him. Check your prayer attitude, don’t be so self-centered on your knees.
